BOSSES at Royal Mail have delivered welcome news to worried residents in Upton-upon-Severn after it confirmed it would preserve the town’s historic Georgian post box.
The eye-catching mailbox is set into the wall of the town’s post office on Old Street but residents feared it would be boarded up or even removed as part of plans to relocate the post office to Sean’s News in High Street. The post box is enjoyed by many tourists who like to have their photo taken next to it.
West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin wrote to Royal Mail chief executive Moya Greene asking her to assure the future of the post box and the company has confirmed it will be unaffected by any future changes.
“Quite a few local people expressed concerns about the future of the post box as plans are developed for moving the post office to the High Street,” Mrs Baldwin said.
“It is a valuable part of Upton’s heritage and is as important to tourism as the Pepperpot or the riverfront.”
A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Post boxes are an important part of the UK’s heritage and we are pleased this postbox is being retained.”
