COUNCILLOR John Raine has been elected as the new Chairman of Malvern Hills District Council.
Fellow Coun Barbara Williams handed over the reins to Coun Raine at the Council’s annual meeting on Tuesday having raised more than £8,600 during her time in the role for Cancer Research and the Midlands Air Ambulance.
Coun Raine takes on the special honour having been a district councillor for 16 years, and has carried out the role of vice chairman over the past year. He will now devote the next 12 months to his new duties.
His main intentions include promoting awareness around mental health issues a with Powick based Link Nurseries being one of his chosen charities for the year.
Coun Raine will also be supporting a group of other mental health charities that have roots in the district, under the banner of Mental Health Deserves Cash (MHDC).
He said: “I feel privileged to take over the role as chairman for Malvern Hills District Council, and I would like to say a big thank you to Barbara who has done a fantastic job over the last 12 months. She will be a hard act to follow.
“I am looking forward to the challenges the next twelve months will bring, along with the pleasure of representing the members across the district, supporting residents and local community projects, attending local events and raising funds for mental health charities, it’s going to be an exciting and busy year.”
Coun Chris O’Donnell was elected as vice chairman.
