Malvern's new Mayor relishing the year ahead

CYNTHIA Palmer has said she is ‘delighted’ and ‘honoured’ to become Malvern’s new Mayor and is relishing an exciting year ahead.

Coun Palmer was elected for the prestigious role at Malvern Town Council’s annual meeting last Tuesday. It is the first time she has been Mayor of the town where she has lived for more than 15 yeQars.

Speaking exclusively to the Observer, the Priory ward councillor said: “I am so delighted to be Malvern’s new mayor. It’s a great honour and the chance to represent this beautiful town is something very special.

“Being elected was a very memorable event and I’m so looking forward to the next twelve months ahead.”

Coun Palmer has been a member of Malvern Town Council for the past three years and said her biggest challenge during her time with the famous chain was to put the town’s Neighbourhood Plan together.

“Working on the Neighbourhood Plan will be the biggest challenge I think,” she added.

“We are not quite there yet but I’m hoping in the New Year it will all come into fruition. It’s going to be a big thing for the future of Malvern and will shape the town moving forward in terms of heritage, green spaces and employment for the next 25 years.

I am a member of the Route to the Hills Project Management Group and I am looking forward to seeing this project become a reality over the next year as some of the information stands and route markers are put in place.

“Also, and most importantly, I look forward to working closely with the District and County Councils to ensure that we can deliver the best services possible for our residents and visitors to our beautiful town.”

Coun Palmer has decided to raise money for Acorns Children’s Hospice which supported her husband Tony when he lost his young daughter.

The new Mayor will be deputised by Hannah Campbell, who at 25-years-old is believed to be one of the youngest councillors – possibly the youngest – to be deputy Mayor in Malvern Town Council’s history.

Coun Campbell told the Observer it was great to be stepping up the council ladder.

“I’m really pleased and am so excited to be working with our new Mayor Cynthia Palmer,” she said.

“She’s a fabulous woman, commercially minded and entrepreneurial so to be supporting someone like that is going to make for a fruitful and productive year ahead.

“I’ve been a town councillor for five years and it felt now is the time for me to step up. Hopefully I’ve got lots to bring to the table.”
