HUNDREDS of residents in Upton had a day to remember as the town held a huge celebration to mark The Queen’s 90th birthday.
The initial wet weather did not dampen spirits on Saturday when residents including hundreds of school children gathered to mark one of the town’s most memorable days in recent times.
A celebratory procession involving all parts of the community was held early in the afternoon giving Upton a joyful carnival feel to mark the occasion before a fun-filled afternoon tea and dog show was held at the grounds of Upton Rugby Club.
The huge day of celebration first came about several months ago when a number of residents appealed for suggestions on what children and staff at Upton Primary School could do to mark Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.
But following significant interest from the wider community plans were then expanded to do something special for the whole town.
Upton resident Tracy Hall, one of the organisers of the day event, told the Observer she was thrilled with the way it had all panned out.
“There were about six key organisers and each one of us has been left totally overwhelmed by the support of the community,” she said.
“There was a bit of rain but thankfully it went away well after we got started. It was a great occasion and just showed what a great community spirit we have here in Upton.
“It’s a day hopefully many will remember for years to come.”
Special guests on the day included Britain’s Got Talent star Pippa Langhorne and West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin.
There was also a window dressing competition involving a number of Upton shops and a Royal themed Bake-Off competition.
Mrs Baldwin said: “We are so lucky in this country to have such a wonderful Queen and Upton turned out in huge numbers to show their appreciation of Her Majesty.
“I would like to thank and congratulate everyone who helped organise this great occasion, which I am sure will be fondly remembered by everyone who attended.”
