THERE were special scenes in Malvern’s Priory Park on Sunday to mark The Queen’s 90th birthday.

Malvern Town Council hosted a special Afternoon Tea in the Park on Sunday to celebrate the Royal occasion which coincided with the council’s Bands In the Park concert which featured live music from the Lydbrook Band.

More than 200 people attended and were seen waving their union flags in time to the music throughout.

Well-known songs such as The Beatle’s When I’m Sixty-Four and the arrangement of Men of Harlech from the film Zulu rubbed shoulders with Elgar’s Pomp & Circumstance March No.1 and I Vow to Thee, My Country as the band’s narrator told the story of the Queen and the Royal Family through the past 90 years.

Malvern Mayor, Coun Cynthia Palmer, opened the concert and the band and the crowd also wished a special happy birthday to George “Nobby” Clark, a former RAF Navigator who served during the Second World War and turns 95 this year.

Malvern town clerk Linda Blake said: “The Mayor, Councillors and staff of Malvern Town Council were delighted to welcome so many people, and wish to thank all who attended for showing their support and for the positive feedback that has been received.”

Robert Morgan, secretary of the Lydbrook Band, said it was a huge honour for the band to be part of Malvern’s official celebrations.

“We’ve played at Priory Park for a number of years and for us it is a very special place for us to perform,” he said.

“And to be asked to play to mark The Queen’s 90th birthday was a fantastic honour for us. I’ve never seen so many people at the park. It was a great occasion.”

Bands in the Park concerts run until September, and full details can be found at www.malverntowncouncil.org/events or www.facebook.com/BITPMalvern.
