'Team Zulu' have a beer named after them ahead of charity mission

A GROUP of determined ramblers are preparing to take on more than 30 miles of Malvern countryside in one day to raise money for charity.

Styled on the famous 1963 film staring Michael Caine and Stanley Baker, ‘Team Zulu’ will take on the 34 mile Worcestershire Way from Great Malvern to Bewdley this Friday (June 17) in aid of St Richard’s Hospice.

To help raise money for the 5,000ft ascent, the 15 strong walking group have had a beer named after them by the town’s Friday Beer Company.

The ‘Team Zulu’ beer has been supported by local pubs including The Mount Pleasant Hotel, Link Wines and West Malvern Social Club and will feature at this weekend’s Three Counties Show, where the hospice will receive a generous donation from each bottle and cask sold.

The team have raised more than £12,500 in the last five years for St Richard’s Hospice, who provide free specialist palliative care to patients living with life-limiting illnesses.

Tarquin Shaw-Young, Colonel of Team Zulu said: “The Worcestershire Way challenge has been going for the last 11 years. I did the first one on my own, but over time more and more people have joined me. This year we have 15 members taking part, our highest to date.

“The group have known each other for sometime now and we like to challenge ourselves. We chose to raise money for St Richard’s Hospice as it has touched the hearts of many of our group who have had loved ones receive care from the charity.

“It’ll be a great day out and we’ll all have fun in our red costumes and flags. There is no time limit, so if others are falling behind we’ll pick them up. We have a great team spirit and are happy to be taking part for such a special cause.”
