Police Commissioner John Campion vows to improve road safety in Hanley Swan

WEST MERCIA’s Police and Crime Commisoner has reassured worried residents he will do everything in his power to improve road safety at a Malvern village.

John Campion visited Hanley Swan over the weekend to speak to residents and those involved in a petition demanding more be done to protect motorists, pedestrians and wildlife by installing more road safety measures in the village.

It follows news, which appeared on one of the Observer’s front pages last month, that a number of ducks were run over and killed by a speeding motorist during the evening of June 2 on the B4209 Hanley Road.

The shocking incident, which was reported to police, led to Hanley Swan Village Stores owner Ros Davies launching an online petition calling for more to be done by Worcestershire County Council after claiming ‘enough was enough’.

Mr Campion, who was elected the new police and crime commisioner earlier this year, held meetings with residents and other community representatives on Saturday to discuss the situation.

After the visit he told the Observer: “I pledged to listen to local concerns and be visible in our communities and this visit was an example of how I’m delivering on those promises.

“It was great to meet local residents and see the community being so active, not just in helping to identify issues, but then also working to resolve them as well.

“For my part, I will do everything I can with local residents and other partners to help find a positive solution.”

The online petition has now had more than 300 signatures with a paper version available at Hanley Swan Village Stores.

Speaking to the Observer last month, Mrs Davies said: “It’s a race track here at times and something needs to be done – things can’t continue the way they are.

“All roads leading to Hanley Swan are straight and it is very inviting for motorists to speed their way through the village. Some do not obey the speed restrictions and have no consideration how fast they are doing.”
