A POPULAR Malvern councillor says he is delighted to be back serving the communities he represents after suffering horrific injuries from a bonfire accident.
Councillor Tom Wells has told the Observer he is thankful for everyone’s good wishes over the past few months and is keen to get his life back to normal after spending many weeks getting treatment to sever burns on his body.
Here his first column for the Observer since suffering from his injuries earlier this year.
“I would like to begin by thanking all those readers who sent cards and goodwill messages following my recent accident. What began as a small trickle quickly became a talking point with hundreds of cards decorating the Burns Unit. This was a lovely surprise and it has played a huge part in helping me to remain positive and aiding my recovery.
“The new skin grafts have taken really well, although it will be some time before they have fully healed. I have confounded the consultants and physiotherapists with my rapid progress to date and I am well ahead of schedule in my recovery. As a consequence I am now once again fully operational as a councillor for many of our local villages. So please don’t hesitate to get in touch if I can be of any assistance. I can’t promise miracles, but I will do my very best to help.
“It is not an exaggeration to say that I owe my life to the Air Ambulance which conveyed me to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in just 15 minutes and the specialist care I received in its world class Burns Unit. We are, indeed, most fortunate to have such a wonderful life saving facility on our doorstep.
“I have decided to raise money for the hospital and the Air Ambulance by running in the Worcester 10 kilometre race in September. It is the least I can do and I shall be looking for sponsors in due course!”
