YOUNGSTERS from Malvern supporting a mental health charity as part of their National Citizens Service activities have received backing from West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin.
Mrs Baldwin visited the group at Malvern Cube, Albert Road North, while in the middle of a series of fundraising events for Olly’s Friendship Foundation which included a cake sale and gig at Malvern Town Football Club on Monday.
Olly’s Friendship Foundation aims to assist in the treatment and care of people suffering from mental or physical illness or in need of rehabilitation as a result of such illness.
The teenagers, who attend Hanley Castle High School and The Chase School, enjoyed two weeks of residential courses followed by a further two weeks working together in the community to support a variety of causes.
More than 200,000 teenagers across the UK have taken part in the voluntary scheme which is aimed at those aged 16 and 17.
Mrs Baldwin said: “The National Citizen Service scheme is a Government-backed initiative which encourages young people to get more involved in their local community.
“It was great to visit a local group to see what they get up to. I was enormously impressed by the group’s ambition and drive – they have set themselves some very tight deadlines to deliver some impressive projects.
“I am told there are still places available this summer and I would encourage as many people as possible to sign up for one of these schemes if they are eligible. It is a great way to meet new people, learn new skills and do something positive in your own local community.”
