TWO OF the country’s most famous sport broadcasters and England’s most capped player of all time will soon be making a special visit to Malvern.
Legendary commentator John Motson, former ITV and now Sky Sports presenter Gary Newbon and former England number one Peter Shilton will be taking to the stage at Malvern Theares for the ‘Sporting Legends’ show.
Newbon, known to millions for fronting ITV’s sport coverage and being an enthusiast for Midlands football over the years, will host the show when it starts its national tour at Malvern Theatres on Thursday, September 8.
The night will give the audience to share conversations with the great sportspeople of our generation during an evening of hilarious anecdotes and memoirs.
Tickets have sold well so far and will also include Kevin Connolly, the UK’s number one sports impressionist and star of TV and Radio’s, Dead Ringers.
Newbon has been a TV Sports presenter both with ITV and Sky Sports for four decades, covering seven World football Cup finals and has literally conducted over a thousand interviews, many of which feature on Sky’s Sporting Heroes. He is viewed by many as the UK’s premier Sports interviewer and has been in the job for nearly 50 years.
Speaking exclusively to the Observer, Newbon said he was thrilled to be bringing the new show to Malvern Theatres.
“This show has been road tested, it works well and we want to make it a real fun night for the people of Malvern and provide them with plenty of laughs and some inside track,” he said.
“If the show is a success then I would certainly would want to bring more big names to Malvern. I’m really looking forward to it.
“I think Malvern is one of the most lovely towns in the West Midlands and I wanted to start the tour there. The backdrop of the hills is lovely and there is a cracking Indian restaurant which I’ll try and sneak into if I can.
“I have close friends connecting with Malvern. Nigel Kennedy used to have a house in Malvern I believe and Nic Lloyd (Malvern Theatres chief executive) I’ve got to know well. He’s a top class operator.”
Motson, or ‘Motty’ as he is famously known has been on the TV screens and radio as a legendary BBC football commentator since 1971.
He has commentated on over 1500 matches for television and radio, including numerous FA Cup and World Cup finals and was recently voted the UK’s best soccer commentator of all time.
Motty will be appearing in his famous sheep-skin coat which he has been well known for wearing for decades.
And Shilton is one of the World’s most famous goalkeepers and England’s most capped footballer with 125 appearances and among the many honours which he proudly possesses are two European Cup winner’s medals. Peter played an extraordinary 1300 competitive matches.
