Worcestershire Vegan's and Veggies stage sheep protest

MEMBERS of the Worcestershire Vegan’s and Veggies group (WVV) staged a protest calling to end the ‘appalling suffering’ of sheep outside Malvern’s Three Counties Showground.

The group, who educate the benefits of a vegan diet and try to reduce the amount of animal products consumed, demonstrated to end the live export of sheep outside the National Sheep Association’s annual show at the end of last month.

Group members wore sheep masks as they held up banners and gave out leaflets to those entering the show.

Ronald Lee, WVV’s communications officer said: “Hundreds of thousands of sheep are exported from this country every year and a large number of them undergo appalling suffering in the process.

Injury

“They can travel for up to 14 hours on poorly-ventilated cattle trucks without rest or water and can suffer from injury, exhaustion and dehydration.

“Then they are slaughtered in foreign abattoirs, where conditions are often far worse than those in this country.

“We were calling on the National Sheep Association to end its support for live exports and for the government to take action to put a stop to this cruel practise.

“There was a good deal of sympathy for our protest from people going into the show, including many farmers, as well as ordinary members of the public.”
