Motorists warned to take care as heavy showers expected

Malvern Editorial 15th Sep, 2016 Updated: 20th Oct, 2016   0

MOTORISTS in Malvern are being warned to take extra care on the roads with heavy rainfall expected in the next 24 hours.

The Met Office has forecasted an increased risk of heavy showers and possible thunderstorms breaking out throughout the county over the course of this evening (Thursday) with heavy showers possibly continuing overnight into tomorrow (Friday) morning.

The showers are believed to be heavy enough to cause flooding and surface water, particularly in urban areas and across sensitive parts of the transport network.

There is also the possibility of lightning strikes.

Extra Worcestershire County Council Highways gangs are on standby to respond if required.

Coun Marcus Hart, cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said: “The greatest threat from such short but intense rainfall is surface water and the accompanying threat to motorists.

“Drivers should always take care but we encourage greater vigilance in adverse conditions.

“I urge motorists to take extra care, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and avoid driving through patches of surface water.”
