Malven refugee campaigners heading for London march this weekend

SUCCESSFUL campaigners in Malvern which have helped refugees from war-torn Syria resetlle and start new lives in Worcestershire are taking part in a huge march in London this weekend.

The demonstration titled ‘Refugees Welcome Here’ on Saturday will see thousands of people line up the streets of England’s capital in a bid to show support for refugess from Syria and other parts of the world who are stranded and have nowhere to go.

The national event has been organised by groups including the Refugee Council, Amnesty International UK, Solidarity with Refugees and several others.

Members of Amnesty International Malvern Hills and the Malvern Welcomes campaign are urging people to join them on the day and express their support to the cause.

Sue Wolfendale, who is from both groups, said: “We are hoping that as many people as possible from the Malvern area will travel to London together in a powerful show of solidarity with refugees. Please spread the word.”

A statement on Amnesty UK’s website added: “Last September, the image of little Alan Kurdi’s body on a Turkish beach horrified the world. 100,000 of you marched in London in response to tell the UK government that we want to welcome refugees.

“Public pressure makes a difference – that same week, the government agreed to resettle 20,000 Syrian refugees.

“But since then, thousands more terrified and desperate people have lost their lives trying to reach safety.

“On Saturday, September 17 we will march again. It’s the biggest opportunity of 2016 to show Theresa May that the people of the UK want to help refugees.”

Amnesty International Malvern Hills Group have booked a coach to London, which will cost £15 per person.

It will leave the car park opposite Malvern Splash on Priory Road at 8.15am. There are a small number of concessionary tickets (cost £10) for full-time students.
