A FORMER town councillor has launched a campaign to get Nigel Farage a knighthood for his services to politics.
Will Richards, a former Link ward member and UKIP representative on Malvern Town Council, set up the campaign because he said he felt the influence the former UKIP leader had on the EU referendum result and the Brexit which followed deserved some recognition.
Mr Farage was a prominent supporter of the successful campaign for a vote in favour of leaving the EU and Mr Richards said he believed his services to not only politics, but the British people, should be noted.
Mr Richards has set up an online petition which has already received 175 signatures so far but after finding out it would be swiftly rejected by the Government as nominations have to be made by individuals, he has since updated his campaign.
He has now provided anybody who wishes to back his calls with a link to the Government’s website to nominate Mr Farage for a knighthood.
Mr Richards said: “Nigel needs to be recognised for how much he has done.
“Whether you love him or hate him, he has done the most for this country since Winston Churchill.
“The result was the first British referendum on the EU experiment for two generations.
“To do what he has done for so long and to achieve what he has achieved is quite wonderful.
“He has swam against the tide of the establishment, done it with courage and has been so good under pressure.
“When people have been calling him names he still has a smile on his face and a pint in his hand.
“He deserves to be knighted for terrific services, selflessly rendered.”
