UPTON-upon-Severn born Nigel Mansell has paid tribute to world champion Nico Rosberg following the surprising news he has retired from Formula One racing.
Mercedes driver Rosberg sent shockwaves to motorsport fans all over the world earlier today (Friday) when he announced his retirement.
It means his last race in Abu Dhabi, which saw him crowned world champion for the first time, will go down in history as his last.
Mansell himsel won the Formula One world championship in 1992.
Reacting to the news on Twitter, Mansell said: “Nico what a brave very brave decision, he has some very powerful reasons I am sure. Brilliant World Champion. Very interesting for Merc (Mercedes) now.”
In an additional tweet, Mansell added: “We will see the biggest scramble by all drivers to try and join the Mercedes team, watch this develop, going to be very interesting.”
