MORE than 800 people have signed a petition calling for council chiefs to re-open an entrance to an Upton car park.
Residents in Upton have been up in arms since a permanent barrier was put up blocking the rear entance to the Hanley Road car park on New Street.
The barrier was erected by Malvern Hills District Council earlier this year and said it was done on health and safety grounds – reportedly following complaints of speeding drivers using the entrance.
Residents say the car park rear entrance allows people to cross over to Hanley Road, reducing traffic on New Street.
They also are upset over the lack of consultation in the process.
Upton-upon-Severn Town Council called on residents to complete an online survey, saying if there was a high number of responses the matter could be debated at a future Malvern Hills District Council meeting.
Now with more than 800 responses, the issue is set to be debated at next week’s full council meeting on Tuesday, December 6.
Town councillor Catherine Badham called on residents to vent their support for the barrier to come down.
She wrote on the Upton Praish Notice Board on Facebook: “(At the meeting) there will be representatives speaking on behalf of Uptonians BUT we need a gang of you to rock up and show support. There’s no use us telling them how disgustingly arrogant they have been and how angry you all are if none of you come to show it!
“Sadly rules say you cannot speak but you can be there! Please come!”
