Tributes paid to stalwart of Malvern Rugby Club who died aged 85

TRIBUTES have poured in for a ‘one-of-a-kind’ Malvern Rugby Football Club stalwart who has died aged 85.

Peter Lewis was an ever-present figure at the Spring Lane club having captained their second and third teams in the 1970s before taking over as president in 1992.

A stand-out moment during his two-year tenure as chief was watching Malvern lift the prestigious Pilkington Shield at Twickenham in 1994.

Following the conclusion of his playing career in his late 50s, Peter took up the whistle and became a member of the Gloucester and District Referees Society.

He refereed all over the South West region and then graduated as an assessor for the society before taking over the role of refereeing coach.

For all his efforts both on and off the field, Peter was given a life-time achievement award at the society’s annual dinner last July.

Speaking to the Observer, Peter’s daughter Philippa Payne said her ‘unique’ father will leave a lasting legacy on those he had played with, given advice to and those close to him.

“He was just a lovely man. He had a massive passion for rugby and was dedicated to the sport until his very last moment.

“Peter loved guiding and nurturing the up and coming youngsters and recognising their talents.

“He was an inspiration to everybody as he always put others before himself.

“People like Peter just do not exist anymore.”

Club chairman David Robins added Peter was the ‘cornerstone’ of Malvern RFC who believed in the traditions of the game while former team-mates Dennis and Bernard Flanagan said nobody could pick a fault with a ‘down to Earth’ man.

“He was just a super chap. He was completely organised and one of those few guys who would call a spade a spade.

“Peter just got on with his job and was always helping the youngsters.”

Peter’s funeral will take place at Worcester Crematorium, Tintern Avenue, on Thursday, August 3 at 2.30pm.

Floral tributes have been requested to come from family members only.
