Welland rescue team comes in to save four mother rabbits and their 30 babies

A MALVERN rescue organisation has stepped in to help four female rabbits who had 30 babies between them.

Rabbit Rescue and Friends in Welland was contacted by a breeder who had seen the females advertised as free to a good home.

But they had then been unable to cope with the sheer number of rabbits they had given birth to.

The rescue was successful, with mums and their babies in a healthy condition.

The smallest of the babies is currently receiving supplementary feeding to ensure she continues to grow and develop.

Jai Barnes, founder of Rabbit Rescue and Friends, said: “We are a small rescue team but we could not ignore the plight of these mothers and their little ones.

“We don’t usually get as many new arrivals as this at once, but it highlights the growing issue of abandoned pets in Worcestershire.”

The mothers and babies are not yet ready to be rehomed so the issue facing Rabbit Rescue is the urgent need to upgrade some of the existing accommodation.

One business has been found to build a new hutch complex to house the rabbits but the rescue needs to quickly raise £1,100 to fund five of these specially designed homes.

“We desperately need caring local people and businesses to help us fund-raise for the new accommodation – whatever they can raise will make all the difference,” Jai added.

Rabbit Rescue and Friends is not looking to receive donated hutches at this time and the babies are not yet ready to be adopted.

But anyone wishing to donate to the accommodation appeal can do so by visiting tinyurl.com/RabbitRescueHutchAppeal.
