UPTON-upon-Severn residents have been warned after a type of cold caller known as a ‘Nottingham Knocker’ was sighted in town.

West Mercia Police has received a number of reports that a man has been operating in the area trying to sell household items from a holdall.

He was seen today (Thursday) on Welland Road and Monsell Lane at about 12.30pm and was later seen on Old Street at 1.40pm.

The man, who is described as having short brown hair, pale skin, of medium build and in his mid-30s, was abusive when residents refused to buy anything.

Police have urged people that if any sales person approaches their door selling products they should not be persuaded to part with money for items they do not need or of poor quality.

Residents have also advised to use precautionary measures like using as a door chain and to ignore callers if they are unsure who it may be.

A police spokesperson said: “Anyone selling products on a door-to-door basis are required to be in possession of a valid pedlars certificate – a card with the person’s name and photograph is NOT sufficient.

“If in doubt, do not answer the door and report sightings to the non-emergency police line on 101.”
