THE FINAL two acres of land at Great Malvern Cemetery were officially consecrated this week.
In a ceremony on Wednesday morning, Honorary Assistant Bishop Rt Rev Michael Hooper blessed the land which is now set apart forever for interment according to the rites of the Church Of England.
Chaplain Stuart Currie, Mayor of Malvern Coun Cynthia Palmer, Coun Ian Hopwood, town clerk Linda Blake, operations manager Charles Porter and operations co-ordinator Lyndsey Davies also took part in the ceremony.
The cemetery has been in use since 1861 and the consecration of the final piece of land will expand the life of the site by 25 to 35 years.
Coun Palmer said: “It was a lovely service which perfectly befitted the occasion.
“The consecration of this land ensures that further generations can continue interring their loved ones in the beautiful Great Malvern Cemetery.”
Great Malvern Cemetery is associated with Caring for God’s Acre, a unique charity which aims to champion the conservation of churchyards and burial sites across the country.
More than 100 species of naturally occurring and rare plants have been recorded in the cemetery.
