Cyclists warned after increase in bike thefts in Worcestershire

Malvern Editorial 22nd Nov, 2017   0

CYCLISTS are being warned to be on their guard after an increase in bike thefts across Worcestershire in the last few months, writes Lewis Glennon.

Officers from West Mercia Police have now issued advice about how cyclists can keep their bikes safe.

More than half of people’s bikes taken have been stolen from the owner’s property.

Police say when keeping a bike at home, owners should look at where they are storing their bike, as well as recording a full description, including the make, model, and any accessories.

Outside of the house they also advise that people lock their bike somewhere with CCTV footage, and, if that is not possible, somewhere well lit and busy.

They have also reminded the public to make sure that their bike is covered by house contents insurance, or more specific insurance for more expensive bikes.

Finally they advise riders to overtly mark bikes, whether that be buying a label with the rider’s postcode on, or signing up for more expensive schemes such as bike register, a national database set up just to deal with bikes.
