LIBRARIES across Worcestershire are celebrating their Summer Reading Challenge achievements following the release of regional results by The Reading Agency.

The county claimed first place in the West Midlands for the number of young volunteers recruited to help those aged between four and to complete the challenge as well as having the second-highest completion rate.

A total of 180 young volunteers were recruited across the county’s 21 libraries, with 4,704 children signing up to the challenge to read six books over the summer holidays.

And of these, 72 per cent went on to complete the challenge, 15 per cent higher than the national average.

Coun Lucy Hodgson, cabinet member for localism and communities said: “We are absolutely delighted with these results.

“The achievements across the West Midlands are outstanding so Worcestershire’s libraries have done really well.

“The Summer Reading Challenge is such a great initiative for young children and our libraries teams and volunteers thoroughly enjoy being involved.”
