PREPARATIONS are well underway for this year’s Malvern Well Dressing Festival.

The theme for this year’s event, which runs from May 4 to May 10, is ‘Year of the Woman’.

Festival spokesperson Emma Green said; “2018 marks the year that women were first given the vote so it seems only fitting we remember this and other female achievements.

“I can’t wait to see the dressings it inspires.”

Now in its 18th year, the festival continues to strike a chord with residents across the town.

Run by the Malvern Spa Association and committee of volunteers, last year’s event saw more than 50 sites dressed and more people than ever before have asked to take part this year.

Rick Banbury, chair of the committee, said: “We are running short of accessible, local wells. A delightful difficulty which makes for a feast of a festival.”

Well dressing in the Malvern Hills is thought to date back to the 12th century, with records indicating the Holy Well in Malvern Wells was dressed annually.

From 1870 Royal Well in West Malvern was regularly dressed, and the Wyche Spring was also dressed by residents in the 20th century.

Anyone interested in dressing a water source this year or in the future should call Mr Banbury on 07933 394370 or email [email protected].

Residents can also turn up to the ‘How To Dress a Well’ meeting at the Lyttleton Rooms on March 26 at 7pm for further information.
