Active Workplace Challenge launched to get Worcestershire's workers exercising more

Malvern Editorial 30th Jan, 2018   0

A NEW campaign has been launched to get Worcestershire’s workers more active.

Latest figures revealed people sit down for an average of 8.9 hours each day and that one in four did fewer than 30 minutes of physical activity a week.

Those alarming statistics are the driving force behind Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire’s (SPHW) scheme to combat inactivity among busy workers across the county.

The 2018 Active Workplace Challenge is an eight-week scheme from the County Sports Partnership Network (CSPN), run in collaboration with SPHW, designed to improve mental and physical well-being and breakdown the culture of a desk-bound lunch.

Running until March 4, this year’s message is ‘make every minute count’ as workplaces across the county are encouraged to join forces and introduce ten-minute bite-sized chunks of physical activity before, during and after work.

Stephen Brewster, chief executive at SPHW, said: “It’s all too easy to stay at the desk over lunch, or to work late in the office to meet a deadline, but this is contributing to a worrying trend of inactivity amongst the working population.

“Too many of us aren’t getting the recommended 150 minutes of exercise in a week and it’s having a serious impact on our mental and physical health, not to mention the productivity of workers.

“The 2018 Active Workplace Challenge is about giving people the support and inspiration to get up on their feet and bring physical activity into and around their working day.”

There will be a series of projects, events, inspiration and advice provided by SPHW designed to help people improve their physical and mental well-being by getting more active in and around their working day.

Together with the Workplace Challenge online activity tracking resource, it is easy to get involved.
