Highways team keep Worcestershire moving during winter storm

Malvern Editorial 6th Mar, 2018   0

WORCESTERSHIRE County Council’s Highways department spread more than 2,000 tonnes of salts on the region’s roads during the periods of snow and ice.

Storm Emma and the Beast from the East brought the winter weather and led to the authority’s teams working tirelessly to keep residents moving.

The council’s Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Highways Coun Alan Amos said: “Our teams have once again, done a fantastic job in keeping the roads open.

“It was another efficient, highly organised, and competent exercise and I know the people of Worcestershire are grateful to and proud of them all.”

Worcestershire, during the snowy few days, was placed under both amber and yellow weather warnings by the Met Office.

The County Council has 7,000 tonnes of salt housed within its depots and the gritters were out every night of the past week to spread on the roads as the cold weather continued.

Around 5,000 tonnes of salt is also kept within reserves as well to ensure there is enough salt to spread on the roads, during periods of cold and wintry weather.

The counties household recycling centres, are now all re-open, following a brief closure as temperatures begin to climb, and the snow begins to thaw.

Anyone who knows of a grit bin which needs refilling should visit www.worcestershire.gov.uk/reportit to use the authority’s ‘Report It’ system.
