Malvern bring an end to Droitwich's 40-game winning league run

MALVERN brought an end to Droitwich’s 40-game winning league run, spanning over two years, to delay the visitors’ chance of winning Midlands Two West (South) for a further week.

Director of rugby Rob Cook was pleased with Malvern’s 42-17 success at Spring Lane, especially after suffering a 15-7 reverse at Berkswell & Balsall the previous week.

“This was a very good win for us,” he said.

“We were strong in all areas, solid in the scrum and even taking the ball against the head.

“Our line-out was also quality.

“We knew if got the ball to the backs we could cause havoc and we did just that against a well-drilled Droitwich defence.”

Malvern were rewarded with an early penalty try following a high challenge by James Shewell but Droitwich responded well with a typical drive over try.

Jack Curtis put Malvern back in front with Cook kicking the conversion before the latter slotted over a penalty.

Tom Hale was next over the line with Cook once again adding the extras.

Droitwich battled back but another two penalties fired the hosts into a 27-5 lead.

After the break Droitwich gave another penalty which Cook slotted over to further extend Malvern’s advantage.

But the Monners hit back with a try from a driving maul.

Undeterred, Malvern went on the offensive with Jack Longley touching down before Conor Giggle bagged the hosts’ final try.

Droitwich had the last say with a penalty try as Malvern brought the curtain down on the visitors’ incredible winning run.

Up next for Malvern is a trip to Earlsdon.
