A PAIR of intrepid Malvern Hills councillors raced against the clock to get back to the town after being blindfolded and dropped at an unknown location.
Coun Natalie McVey and Coun Daniel Walton took part in the 48-hour ‘Drop the Councillors’ challenge on October 25.
They had to make it back to Malvern using just their investigative powers, a map, a compass and the stars. They had no access to cash, were not allowed to use electronic navigation systems and were banned from using public transport.
The destination was chosen by Malvern Hills District Council leader Coun Sarah Rouse, Coun Mick Davies and Coun Peter Whatley.
Funds raised by the pair will go to the Maggs Day Centre Malvern, a direct-access day centre providing help and support to rough sleepers and people at risk of homelessness.
The centre, at the Salvation Army Hall on Newtown Road in Malvern, will cost £38,000 to recruit, train and employ staff for a 12-month trial.
Coun McVey said: “I am so excited to be taking on this challenge to raise funds for such a great cause.
“The Maggs Day Centre Malvern will provide a much-needed safe space for rough sleepers and vulnerable people across the district, as well as support, hot meals, a place to shower and laundry facilities.”
Coun Walton added the challenge took them out of their comfort zone and he hoped people would show their support.
