Malvern primary school lands cash for urgent repairs thanks to help from MP Harriett Baldwin

A PRIMARY school will be receiving funds to repair its broken windows after a long-running campaign by MP Harriett Baldwin.

The broken windows at Malvern Parish Primary made teaching difficult in extreme weather conditions so Ms Baldwin agreed to back the school’s bid for cash from the annual Condition Improvement Fund from the Department for Education.

The MP met with headteacher Susan Parker in 2019 to discuss the issue and then with with Education Ministers. She even raised the issue in the House of Commons to secure support for the bid.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson agreed earlier this year to allow officials to work with the school to make sure the bid was successful this year.

The money is part of a £483million award confirmed yesterday but Ms Baldwin was briefed by the department ahead of the announcement and she rang the school’s headteacher to share the good news.

Ms Baldwin said: “Each year, a number of local schools get funds to carry out urgent repairs and I shared the frustration of the teachers and governors at Malvern Parish Primary that their bids kept being rejected.

“After seeing the poor condition of the damaged windows first-hand, I committed to working closely with the school and the Department for Education to identify how the bid could be improved to get it over the line this year.

“I’m really pleased that this work has delivered a success and I rang the head teacher to tell her the good news.

“I visit many primary schools each year and tell each that I am happy to support their bids into this useful fund. I

“’I’ve got a couple more schools who have enlisted my help and I will continue to lobby central Government for the right funding to improve classrooms for every child in West Worcestershire.”
