A NUMBER of recycling bins have been installed near schools across Malvern Hills district in a bid to tackle waste issues, writes Billy Powis.

Malvern Hills District and Malvern Town councils have joined forces to trial the five bins near two secondary schools – Dyson Perrins and The Chase.

It is hoped their presence will encourage pupils to reduce their level of waste as well as foster improved habits.

The scheme is inspired from Malvern Hills District Council’s five year plan to ‘Refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle’ as well as Malvern Town’s commitment to its environmental policy.

Coun Sarah Rouse, Portfolio holder for Environment at Malvern Hills District Council, strongly believes in the project’s influence.

“Initiatives such as this will really help boost recycling rates not just at home, but when people are on the go.

“It will also help encourage our younger generation to recycle when they are arriving or leaving school.”

Nick Houghton, the Mayor on Malvern Town Council, said he was pleased with the work between the two authorities, describing it as ‘a great demonstration of local councils working together.
