Handel's Messiah to be performed by candlelight at Worcester Cathedral

Malvern Editorial 16th Nov, 2024   0

MUSIC lovers rejoice as there is a chance to experience Handel’s Messiah by candlelight at Worcester Cathedral.

The festive concert is being staged at 7.30pm on Saturday December 7 by the region’s leading large classical choir, Worcester Festival Choral Society.

Alongside the Hallelujah chorus there will be 45 well-known choruses and arias including For unto us a Child is Born and The Trumpets Shall Sound.

Performing with WFCS will be star soloists Hannah Davey, Judith Le Breuilly, Paul Smy and James Cleverton. Accompaniment will be provided by the Meridian Sinfonia Baroque orchestra, while Worcester Cathedral’s director of music, Samuel Hudson, will conduct.

Written more than 280 years ago, Handel’s Messiah remains one of the world’s most famous and popular pieces of choral music.

When King George II attended its premiere in 1742, he is said to have been so moved by the Hallelujah chorus that he rose to his feet – a tradition that audiences continue today.

Sue White, chairman of Worcester Festival Choral Society, said: “Handel’s Messiah is a thrilling way to herald in the Christmas season. Do come along for a fantastic festive treat.”

Established in 1861 and closely associated with Sir Edward Elgar in its early years, Worcester Festival Choral Society draws its auditioned singers from across the region.
