THE CHAIRMAN of Malvern Hills District Council (MHDC) has offered condolences to the Royal Family following the passing of The Duchess of Kent, last week.

Councillor Daniel Walton, chairman of MHDC, said the council was saddened to hear about the passing of Her Royal Highness and offered condolences to the entire family on behalf of the local authority.

A statement from Coun Walton said: “We are saddened to hear about the passing of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent.

“On behalf of Malvern Hills District Council, we send our condolences to His Majesty The King and The Royal Family.

“We are thankful for her lifelong commitment to music and tennis, as well as the positive difference she made to many young people’s lives through her charity work.”

The Duchess of Kent (Katharine, née Worsley), born 22 February 1933, was the youngest child of Sir William Worsley and Joyce Brunner.

Educated in Yorkshire and Norfolk, she pursued musical studies and early caregiving roles before meeting and marrying Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, in 1961.

A devoted mother of three, she served the Royal Family dutifully, becoming a Dame Grand Cross (GCVO) and a cherished figure at Wimbledon.

Her heartfelt transition to Catholicism in 1994 and her stepping back from royal duties in 2002 led to a remarkable charitable career, centred on music education.

Through the Future Talent charity, she helped nurture young musicians.

Her many presidencies, patronages, and volunteer work – at institutions at home and abroad – reflected her lifelong commitment to children, the arts, and the welfare of others. She passed away on September 5, 2025.
