WEST WORCESTERSHIRE MP Harriett Baldwin has praised the efforts of local people who marched across the Malvern Hills to raise money for a veterans’ charity.
Organisers of the popular annual Malvern Hills Challenge this week confirmed that walkers had raised nearly £17,000 for the Help for Heroes charity.
Dame Harriett joined local civic dignitaries awarding medals to people who completed the trek along the Malvern Hills.
Hundreds of local people take part in the annual fund-raiser and walkers were again treated to a fly past of a Spitfire plane in celebration of their efforts.
The Royal Air Force is this year marking the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the fly-past was also a fitting tribute to those who gave their lives fighting to defend our way of life in the Second World war.
Dame Harriett said: “Each year, I am honoured to be asked to participate in this event and hand out medals to people who have walked over our wonderful Malvern Hills.
“We all know of the important work carried out by those who serve in the armed forces and we acknowledge the great work the Help for Heroes charity does helping veterans who need extra support.
“Once again, local people have dug deep in their pockets to sponsor local walkers and its tribute to the enthusiasm and fitness of local people that so many people take part.
“I want to thank all the volunteers who make this event possible each year and mean that such a large amount of money is donated to a great cause.”
