MALVERN Green Space has been awarded almost £20,000 in National Lottery funding to support its work with the community in a variety of activities.
The charity has been running since 2021 and started in response to the climate emergency, it aims to be a focal point of change, helping people to build resources for a more sustainable future.
It is open to everyone – adults, children, minority groups, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ community.
The Friday ‘waste food’ café, held at Rodway Hall, is in an accessible building in the heart of the residential area of Malvern Link.
Volunteers cook plant based meals from ‘waste’ food helping to feed bellies not bins.
Malvern Green Space also holds a monthly ‘sharing hub’ where plants and seeds are swapped, composting and gardening advice given, clothes repaired and given away.
Throughout the year the charity also runs sustainable workshops – the next will be in December with a return of the popular Christmas wreaths and decorations’ all made from garden waste.
The new funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, which distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes and is the largest community fundraiser in the UK, will see the money used to continue with this popular local project which is open to everyone.
Volunteer fundraiser Dibah Farooqui, said: “We’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognised our work in this way. Now, thanks to National Lottery players we will be able to press on with our plans to broaden the range of opportunities available to the local community.
“This is important during this critical time with higher food prices and utility bills. Our Friday ‘waste food café’ offers a warm space and a hot meal for anyone who wishes to attend with a focus on building an environmentally sustainable community.
“We will now be able to run this for the next 2 years alongside a range of our other regular activities.”
