WEST WORCESTERSHIRE MP Dame Harriett Baldwin has welcomed action which aims to protect the electricity supply to the centre of Great Malvern.
Businesses in Church Street were hit by a series of power blackouts after underground cabling failed causing the local sub-station to trip the supply causing outlets to close early and turn customers away in the peak pre-Christmas trading period.
The MP contacted National Grid to carry out to urgent repairs to the underground cable and the company has now confirmed that is has reconfigured the local power supply to increase reliability of the service.
The company is also planning to work on two sub-stations in the centre of Malvern to improve resilience of the service.
Dame Harriett reached out to National Grid after local businesses raised their concerns about the power cuts crippling their shops, cafes and restaurants around Church Street.
Dame Harriett said: “I am grateful for the swift feedback passed on to me from local traders and the speed with which National Grip put in short term solutions.
“It was a terrible time for businesses to have to turn away customers and I have heard feedback that this has been a problem that has been going on for some time.
“I understand that National Grid is planning some immediate remedial action on the local power network and I plan to meet with the local team to get a clearer picture of the challenges the company has meeting demand in Malvern and across West Worcestershire.”
