West Worcestershire MP raises heating oil concerns with Ministers

WEST WORCESTERSHIRE MP Dame Harriett Baldwin has asked Ministers for their advice for people who rely on oil to heat their homes.

Events in the Middle East have caused global oil prices to fluctuate wildly and this is having a serious impact on the price of heating oil supplied to rural homes which are not on the gas network.

The MP has shared her worries with Chancellor Rachel Reeves and written to the Competition and Markets Authority asking it to immediately investigate reports of profiteering.

Dame Harriett has also questioned Treasury Ministers in the House of Commons and was briefed by two Ministers responsible for Treasury policy and energy policy at a meeting on Wednesday.

Dame Harriett said: “The spike in global oil prices has led to a 100 per cent rise in heating oil prices for many of my rural constituents and while electricity bills are capped until June, some people need to fill their oil tanks soon.

“Over recent days I have done all I can to raise the profile of this issue in Westminster and directly questioned the Chancellor and her Ministers but all I see so far is that they advise holding off as long as possible in the hope of deescalation.

“The Competition and Markets Authority may discover there is some bad practice but in the meantime I will keep raising this issue with Government.

“I’ve heard so much worrying feedback in my email inbox but I am encouraging people to share their experiences to allow me to keep feeding intelligence into the Government.”
