Worcester Cathedral warn admission fee could be on the cards amid rising running costs

Malvern Editorial 19th Mar, 2026   0

WORCESTER Cathedral may start charging an admission fee to help secure its long-term financial stability amidst rising running and maintenance costs, writes Ellie Taylor.

Bosses at the building mooted the idea while launching a crucial consultation on future funding but stressed no decision had been taken and they were keen to hear people’s views.

Chapter, an independent charity funding the ministry, is struggling to care for the historic building because of increased reliance on investment income.

In recent years, it has carefully balanced budgets using support from its endowment but this has seen a reduction in its reserves.

Chapter aims to find a resolution to the financial sustainability of the cathedral by strengthening and diversifying its regular income.

Dean Stephen Edwards said: “Let me assure you – our vocation as a place of worship remains unchanged.

“Access for prayer, services and pastoral ministry is not under review.

“This conversation is about good stewardship – ensuring the cathedral can continue to flourish as a place of faith, welcome, heritage, community and civic life for generations to come.

“The consultation focuses on how visitor income might play a stronger role within a wider financial sustainability plan, including the potential of introducing a charged entry fee.

“No decisions have been undertaken. We are seeking informed and honest views before any next steps are considered.”

Chapter are remaining resilient and taking time to respond to this challenge considerately.

Anyone interested in the future of the Cathedral is encouraged to complete the consultation survey, which will remain open until April 10.
