FLASHBACK - When Wembley bound Hereford FC began their journey at Malvern Town

This article was published in July last year when a record crowd of more than 2,000 people saw Hereford FC’s first match – a friendly away at Malvern Town.

A CLUB record attendance of more than 2,000 supporters turned out at Malvern Town’s football ground to see Hereford FC in action for the first time.

Malvern helped to celebrate the Phoenix club’s first match – since it was formed following the demise of Hereford United – at HDanywhere Community Stadium on Tuesday (July 7).

As well as enjoying the barbecue and outdoor bar, Hereford’s travelling fans had plenty to shout about as their side pulled off a 3-2 victory.

And Chris Pinder, chairman of Malvern Town, described the day as ‘football at its best’ as he said there was also a ‘positive’ atmosphere in the ground.

“It was an enjoyable day for both sets of fans,” he said. “It was a good game on the pitch and the fans were great off it.

“It was a club record attendance as the previous best was over 1,000 in 1981, so it was brilliant to see so many people packed into the club.

“I get the feeling that the Hereford supporters are going to treat anyone who puts on a white shirt as heroes for them and they certainly got behind their team.”

Mr Pinder said he also hoped the match against Hereford would become an annual fixture as they look to generate extra funds for the club.

“We have spoken to some Hereford fans who have said it could be a nice little derby to have every year,” he added.

“It would mean a lot to us if we could do that.

“I doubt we would be able to get the same sort of attendance next time, but for a small club like us, these annual fixtures can make a big difference.

“For instance, if our lawn mower breaks down, the extra money would give us the ability to buy a new one or if our floodlights needed renewing we would be able to sort them out without have to burst a gut to do additional fund-raising.”
