A royal clean up for Queen's 90th birthday

MALVERN residents have been urged to join the country’s biggest clean-up event to celebrate The Queen’s 90th birthday.

Clean for the Queen is a project aiming to get one million people across the country to tidy up their local area ahead of Queen Elizabeth II reaching the landmark on Thursday, April 21.

Throughout February and March, people and community organisations have been encouraged to carry out litter picks in their area, with a mass clean-up scheduled in places up and down the UK from Friday, March 4 to Sunday, March 6.

Malvern Hills District Council have backed the campaign and is loaning out litter picking equipment on a first come, first served basis to those wanting to hold clean-ups.

Coun Barbara Williams, chairman of Malvern Hills District Council, said: “Our staff already litter pick our town centres and other areas on a regular basis but we can’t be everywhere at once.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to join together to make our towns and villages cleaner places to live and I’d encourage as many individuals, community groups and organisations as possible to take part.”

A special litter ‘hit squad’ of councillors and staff from the council has been assembled and will be out in force on March 4 helping to keep the area clean on top of the council’s usual litter picking activities.

Residents are being urged to pick a potential ‘grot spot’ they would like the squad to tackle and any suggestions can be posted on the council’s Facebook page, tweeted to @MHDCcomms or emailed to [email protected].

Anyone interested in holding their own Clean for the Queen litter pick in their area should email Claire Vaughan or call 01684 862449 by Friday, February 19.
