Higgins takes stage in award-winning production

ONE OF the greatest actresses in her generation is set to take to the stage in Malvern next week when she plays a leading role in an award-winning masterpiece.

Winner of three Olivier Best Actress awards, Clare Higgins will perform at Malvern Theatres in the production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf which comes to the venue between Monday, July 7 and Saturday, July 12.

The award winning drama is set during the course of one brutal and hilarious night when George, a college professor, and his wife Maratha – played by Higgins – invite a young couple back for late night drinks after a party.

As the alcohol flows, the guests are are coerced into witnessing and participating in the pair’s sadistic game playing and vitriolic verbal scrapping which reaches its climax in a momentous revelation.

First staged on Broadway in 1962, the impact of its vicious wit, frank language and riveting characters firmly established the play as one of the great plays in post war American drama.

Higgins achieved the heights of award-winning success following her previous roles in Hecuba at the Donmar Warehouse and Sweet Bird of Youth and Vincent in Brixton at the National Theatre.

Her many film and television credits include New Tricks, The Syndicate, I Give It A Year, Parade’s End, Homefront, Holby City, Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice and Silent Witness.

BAFTA award-winning actor Tim Pigott-Smith stars as George after receiving rave reviews for his performance in Mike Bartlett’s King Charles III at London’s Almeida Theatre.

The Midlands born star has also starred in Downton Abbey, Miranda, Quantum of Solace, V for Vendetta, Bloody Sunday and The Jewel in the Crown for which he won his BAFTA for Best Actor.

Shows take place at 7.30pm each evening with matinee performances taking place on Wednesday (July 9) and Saturday (July 12) at 2.30pm.
