THE BLOCKBUSTER movie which pays tribute to the life of Nelson Mandela will be screened in Malvern from Friday (January 17).

Mandela – Long Walk To Freedom, starring Idris Elba, Naomie Harris and Terry Pheto, will be shown at Malvern Theatres between Friday, January 17 and Saturday, January 25.

The former South African president, who was the first black person to lead his country, died on December 5 at the age of 95 following a long illness.

The movie which premiered in September, three months before Mandela’s death, is based on the 1995 book Long Walk To Freedom.

It tells the story of his life focusing on when he came of age, his education and the 27 years he spent in prison after he was sentenced for life for sabotage.

The second part of the movie then tells the story of him becoming President of South Africa and his work to rebuild the country’s once segregated society after being freed from prison in 1990.

Producer Anant Singh started working on the project after interviewing Mandela while he was still imprisoned two decades ago.

Following the publication of Mandela’s autobiography, Singh was granted the rights to the film adaptation, which was completed 16 years later by screenwriter William Nicholson.

Tickets cost from £4.50 and are available by calling the Grange Road venue on 01684 892277.
