18-year-old candidate to take on Malvern council leader in election debate

Malvern Editorial 16th Apr, 2023   0

AN 18-year-old Conservative candidate will be taking on Malvern Hills District Council leader Coun Tom Wells in a debate one week before the 2023 elections.

Sebastian Barbour, who is contesting the Powick and Henleys ward, challenged Coun Wells earlier this month, with the clash taking place at Powick church on Wednesday, April 26.

Currently, no single party is in control of the District council, with Coun Wells elected the authority’s leader at an annual meeting last May.

Malvern residents will be casting their ballots in the local elections on May 4.

Mr Barbour is currently a high school student but has always been interested in politics and wanted to get involved ‘at the earliest opportunity.’

He said: “I was really excited when I was adopted as a candidate.

“I am up for the challenge against Coun Wells, both in this debate and in the election itself.”
