Legendary Malvern singer Jenny Lind to be celebrated at Elgar Festival

Malvern Editorial 28th Apr, 2024   0

ONE of the 19th century’s most revered singers, Jenny Lind, will be celebrated at this year’s Elgar Festival.

Jenny Lind – who was often called the ‘Swedish Nightingale’ – was born in Stockholm in 1820, but her fame and fortune led her to England.

On her retirement, Lind and her husband bought a house in Malvern at Wynds Point and she lived there until she died in 1887.

Her life will be uncovered at a talk at 3pm on Thursday, May 30 at Sir Edward Elgar’s birthplace, The Firs in Lower Broadheath, Worcester.

American-born soprano April Fredrick – The English Symphony Orchestra’s first Affiliate Artist – and writer Michele Lammas, will lead the talk and workshop to uncover the woman behind the legend.

Entry is free although tickets must be pre-booked.

The legendary musician will also be celebrated on Saturday, June 1, when The Jenny Lind Singers, an all-female choir named after her, will perform a concert at Worcester’s Guildhall.

The Jenny Lind Singers were founded in the 1970s at Malvern Girls’ College and hold several concerts a year.

The Elgar Festival was established by decree of Worcester City Council in 2018 and is traditionally held on the weekend closest to the legendary Worcestershire composer’s birthday, June 2, 1857.
