A ONE-off, all-star group has been formed to bring a unique experience to Worcestershire’s Elgar Festival.

The festival will welcome Blues star, guitarist and special guest Alex Voysey, who will play alongside The Old Blue Gang at the second of the ‘Club Elgar’ events.

The band will play at Worcester’s Royal Porcelain Works at 10.15pm on Saturday, June 1 and offer a nightclub-style evening of entertainment.

Guest guitarist Alex Voysey is one of the best young contemporary blues players in the UK and a rising star on the blues scene.

The concert will feature music by by Son House, Skip James, Robert Johnson, Ledbelley, Howlin Wolf, Willie Dixon, Led Zeppelin as well as McCartney, Kenneth Woods and Elgar himself.

This year’s festival runs between Tuesday, May 27 and Sunday, June 2 and will celebrate the legacy of legendary Worcestershire composer Sir Edward Elgar.

The Elgar Festival was established by decree of Worcester City Council in 2018 and is traditionally held on the weekend closest to Elgar’s birthday, June 2, 1857.

Kenneth Woods, Artistic Director of The Elgar Festival said: “In a Festival week in which we explore the Origins of Inspiration, this concert will take listeners on a journey through the history of this most important musical form.

“From the birth of the Delta blues in the poverty-stricken Jim Crow south, through the worldwide triumph of rock and roll, this concert is a celebration of how a generation of self-taught musicians inspired millions and changed the world forever.

“Club Elgar is about two things, having fun and knocking down the walls between musical genres.”
