PEOPLE can learn about the intriguing history of a multitude of places across Malvern during this year’s free Heritage Open Days from September 9 to September 17.
The events are part of the UK’s largest history and culture festival, involving thousands of local volunteers and organisations.
Here are some of the highlights:
- The old former Guildford malt house will be open with an exhibition of a range of country art and crafts by members of the local community including the Women’s Institute.
The exhibits, at 4 Penny Lane, Guarlford will take place September 15, 16 and 17 from 1pm to 4pm with refreshments available.
Guarlford village hall was built around 1879, originally as a malt house where the hops grown locally were spread out to dry.
Over the past 100 years it has been host to countless village craft and produce shows, harvest festivals and other community gatherings typical of a rural Worcestershire village.
Church events
Churches across Malvern will invite visitors to experience the history of their communities iconic religious landmarks as part of this year’s Heritage Open Days.
- St Peter’s Church, Powick will be open on September 11, 13 and 15 from 11am to 4pm with a WI stall with memorabilia through the ages, information on music halls through the ages, circus groups and the stained glass windows and exhibitions from a local painting group and local drama group.
Cream teas will be available on the last day.
- At Guarlford Village Hall, on September 15, 16 and 17 from 1pm to 4pm, the old former malt house open with an exhibition of a range of country crafts and art by members of the local community.
Refreshments will be on offer including homemade cake and visitors will also have the opportunity to visit the nearby St Mary’s church, built in 1844. Friday 15,
- At the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Madresfield on September 9 from 10am to 4pm and September 10 from 2pm to 5pm, there will be a chance to follow trails around the church and churchyard, highlighting history and creativity.
There will also be an exhibition and Harvest decorations set up in and around the Church.
