Apprenticeships in Worcestershire rising above national average

Malvern Editorial 23rd Dec, 2017   0

APPRENTICESHIP numbers in Worcestershire are growing faster than the national rate.

A total of 5,440 people across the county started apprenticeships this year, an increase on 2016 and faster than the national average.

Worcestershire has one of the fastest growing economies in terms of productivity and the fact apprenticeship numbers are growing year-on-year reinforces this.

It is Worcestershire County Council’s ambition for all children and young people to succeed in their careers in the county.

Together with the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership, the authorityl champions careers programmes and apprenticeship schemes to increase opportunities in key economic sectors.

Last year’s apprenticeship figure in Worcestershire was 5,390.

Marcus Hart, cabinet member with responsibility for education and skills, said: “I’m very pleased to see that Worcestershire’s apprenticeship numbers are growing faster than the national rate.

“We work closely with the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership (WLEP) to provide opportunities for young people across the county.

“We have very talented youngsters in Worcestershire that will positively contribute to our economy and we want them to carry on working in Worcestershire in the future.”

Mark Stansfield, Chairman of Worcestershire LEP, added figures showed apprenticeships were becoming increasingly popular in the county and more of the younger generation was taking the opportunity to earn while they learn.

“Local apprentices and apprenticeship employers are benefitting from a hugely effective support network, with a great amount of advice available from the Worcestershire Apprenticeships Hub,” he said.

A record 360 people attended this year’s Worcestershire Apprenticeship Awards final in November.

A total of 30 of the county’s best apprentices, apprenticeship employers, schools and training providers were celebrated in a total of twelve categories at the Treetops Pavilion, West Midland Safari Park.

Ben Hyde, winner of the Apprentice of the Year 2017 award, added: “The support I have received during my apprenticeship has been beneficial to my personal development.

“The opportunities Worcestershire Group Training and Sanctuary Group have given me have been invaluable.

“I would definitely recommend people to apply for an apprenticeship to give you experience in the working environment and build a competent working mentality for the rest of your life.”

The most popular industries for apprentices in Worcestershire include construction, engineering and ICT.
