Birds of prey pay flying visit to Malvern care home

A MALVERN care home treated its residents to a flying visit from birds of prey in support of a national bird watching campaign.

Residents at Care UK’s Perry Manor, on Charles Hastings Way welcomed different birds including a tawny owl, a long eared owl, and a peregrine falcon ahead of RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

They admired the birds of prey and learned about each of their characteristics, their food preferences, and how they hunt their prey in the wild.

The birds of prey even rested on the residents’ arms, as an experienced and professional falconer from ‘Walk With Hawks’ handled the birds throughout the home.

Mike Parson, a resident at Perry Manor, said: “I have never held an Owl before and it was a nice experience and very interesting. We learnt facts about the birds that I did not know.”

It was smiles all round and a fantastic day for residents according to the home’s manager, Katherine Matthews.

“We loved welcoming the impressive creatures into the home – the residents were truly in awe of them.

“Animal therapy has proven to be incredibly beneficial for older people, as it can prompt social interaction, increase physical activity and be calming; and this event was perfect for just doing that.

“I’d like to thank everyone who was involved in making today was very memorable for everyone,” she added.
