Boost for Malvern town centre as several new businesses open in the High Street

THE LEADER of Malvern Hills District Council has hailed a number of new shop openings in the high street.

Seven new businesses have either opened or are planning to open in Malvern Town Centre.

They include vintage clothing store The Reclaimers, The Watercure – a new bar and restaurant which will be taking over the empty former Natwest bank unit – and Blackbird which specialises in children, flowers and home.

Other businesses include Tina Iacovelli (clothing and accessories), Bespoke Hair Company, The One Nail Bar and Heidi’s Treasure Trove.

The redevelopment in the former Brays department store has also confirmed the opening of two businesses, which are relocating from Church Street and Malvern Link.

Coun Sarah Rouse said: “The fact we have businesses opening up and filing empty units, when other areas are watching shops sadly close their doors, is a sign of confidence in our district and the high street.

“However it remains very challenging for town centres and we are not complacent.

“We are doing everything we can to support our traders, as well as to give people confidence to return to our town and district centres, and discover the many unique and wonderful businesses there are to explore.”

And there have been further boosts away from Malvern town centre – Hamper Fayre has opened in Tenbury Wells, The Stichery and Ginger and Pickles Traditional Toys in Upton-upon-Severn and Hodges Hair Barber Shop in Poolbrook, Malvern.

Shops in Tenbury Wells have also reopened their doors since the February floods, including Smarty Pants which has temporarily opened in another shop further along Teme Street.

Malvern Hills District Council says it is doing everything it can to support traders across the district to get back on their feet, as they recover from the pandemic.

Residents can buy two-hour permits which will allow them to park for two hours, in any four hour period, in any council owned car park.

They cost just £25 and if people buy them during August, they will get 15 months for the price of 12.

Sophie Jackson has been appointed as a dedicated Town Centre Recovery Officer to work with businesses and on promotional campaigns, to encourage people to support their local traders.

Public hand sanitiser points are being installed across the district to help keep people safe while out and about, and pavement licences are available for businesses to apply for outdoor dining.

The council has also been supporting the #ShopLocal campaign by highlighting on social media, the many wonderful local businesses available to people. As well as supporting the markets in Great Malvern’s Priory grounds

Work also continues on the council’s high street prospectuses, which will be used to develop a blueprint for transforming the district’s high streets, to make sure they are fit for the future.
