Campaigners pleased as bid for 100 homes faces rejection

MAJOR plans to build more than 100 homes in Lower Howsell look set to be rejected after concerns were raised over the development by highways chiefs.

Halkin Development Ltd submitted the application to construct 110 houses on land off Lower Howsell Road but Worcestershire County Council’s highways department said the Spring Lane junction to the site was already under strain and further development would add stress to this.

It added the applicant failed to assess the vehicle impact on that junction and did not demonstrate the proposal would not affect the roads in terms of capacity, risks or hazards.

Malvern Civic Society has also backed calls to reject the plans, which would include 40 per cent affordable homes, on the grounds the access is unsafe.

Ron Harris from Summerfield Road has led a campaign against the proposal and said he was delighted the highways department have opted for refusal.

He said: “I am really pleased we have had some positive and sensible feedback from our local authority on the grounds that the proposal should never go ahead.”
