Campaigners push case over badger culling

Malvern Editorial 21st Oct, 2016   0

CAMPAIGNERS dressed as badgers held a protest on Friday (October 14) in an area where MP Harriet Baldwin was holding a surgery to show their opposition to the Government’s policy on the cull of the creatures.

The demonstration, at Clarence Park Village, saw members of the Worcestershire and Vegans wave placards and call on the West Worcestershire MP to ‘oppose the cull and save the badgers’.

They waved placards and called on her to oppose the cull and ‘save the badgers’.

Ronald Lee, the group’s communications officer, claimed the majority of people in the UK opposed the badger cull.

“We want her to listen to them, as well as to ourselves.

“The protesters received lots of toots of support from passing cars and Clarence Park residents were keen to sign postcards calling on the Government to end the cull.

“Hundreds of badgers have already been shot in Gloucestershire, Somerset and Dorset in the last three years and now the slaughter is taking place in several other areas.”

He claimed a large number of the badgers that had been killed did not die immediately and underwent considerable suffering.

“The Government states the reason for the badger cull is to prevent the spread of TB in cattle, but there is a very large amount of evidence that it will not be effective in doing this and could well make the problem worse.”

He added fewer than 40,000 dairy cows were killed each year in the UK because of bovine TB which was less than ten per cent of 450,000 total.

Harriett Baldwin said: “I’m proud to live in a free country where people can dress up as badgers and shout ‘badger killer’ at passers by in their spare time.

“I would prefer it if they didn’t intimidate vulnerable constituents who seek my advice at my weekly surgery.”
