MONEY has been stolen from a cash box after it was taken from a startled security guard.

The incident happened around 10.45am on Monday, May 26 outside Malvern’s Marks and Spencer store on Roman Way.

The security guard was carrying the cash box from his van parked in front of the store towards the cash machine when somebody shouted ‘Watch out’ which made him drop it.

At that point a white man wearing a grey hooded top grabbed the box and ran into a a blue coloured Saab 93, driven by a man wearing a black beanie hat.

A short time later a Saab matching the description was found abandoned on Spring Lane while the cash box had been emptied and discarded opposite the petrol station on Sandys Lane.

Police said they did not how much money was stolen by the offenders.

A force spokesman confirmed the security guard was shaken but not harmed during the incident.

He added: “The incident happened very quickly but the security guard has been able to give brief descriptions of the man that took the cash box and the man driving the car.

“We’d like to reassure people that incidents of this nature are extremely rare but would ask anyone who believes they may have information about it to come forward as soon as is possible.

“Investigating officers are particularly keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the robbery itself, or who may have seen the Saab being dumped on Spring Lane or the cash box being discarded on Sandys Lane.”

Anyone with information on the incident should call police on 101 and use the reference number 201S 260514 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
